Tuki Tuki River
Last year the waters in the havelock north and Hastings regions water were full of ecoli and soooooooo many people got super sick, this was because there were cracks in the water bores and the rains washed all the poop into the bores. 50 years ago (arording to my teacher) the Tuki Tuki river was clean, clear and PERFECT for swimming, nowadays the Tuki Tuki is full of Algae. Algae grow when they have the right conditions such as adequate nutrients (mostly phosphorus but nitrogen is important too), light levels, pH, temperature, etc. Generally the amount of phosphorus controls the amount of algae found in a freshwater lake or water body. Since 2008 Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has been working on a range of plans and actions in the catchment to provide positive environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes for the region, now and into the future.
